The profile of the University is wide-ranging and its research crosses disciplinary boundaries. The University has developed innovative research perspectives into the various phenomena of society, health and welfare.

The origins of the University in its forerunner, the Civic College, have endowed it with a singularly clear and extensive mission to serve society. The University of Tampere is Finland "s biggest provider of higher education in the field of social sciences and the accompanying administrative sciences.
Some 15,000 students are currently pursuing degrees at the University of Tampere. Every year approximately one thousand master"s degrees and one hundred doctoral degrees are produced. The personnel numbers about 2,000.
The Rector of the University is Ms Liisa Laakso and the Administrative Director is Mr Petri Lintunen. The Chairman of the Board of the University is Mr Kari Neilimo.
The institution that we now know as the University of Tampere was established in Helsinki in 1925. It started life as the Civic College, was renamed the School of Social Sciences in 1930, and became the University of Tampere in 1966.

The new University Strategy for 2016-2020 adopted by the University Board outlines the actions of the University in the coming years.
In 2020, the University of Tampere will be an international research university and a significant generator of innovative, new knowledge. This will be facilitated by the new university in Tampere, which will merge the three higher education institutions.
"The aim is to build a stronger international research university. The strategy highlights multidisciplinarity and phenomenon-based, high-quality research, creative learning, internationality and the strength of the University community," says Chairman of the Board Kai Öistämö.

According to the new Strategy, universities can play a key role as generators of new knowledge upon which to base sustainable and ethical decision-making. The University of Tampere fulfils this purpose as a part of the global scientific community. Among the universities in Finland, the University of Tampere is the frontrunner in the social sciences.
The Action Plan to implement the Strategy of the University of Tampere describes the actions the University will use to carry out its strategic objectives.
In this strategy period, the University will emphasise four themes through which it will strive to achieve its goals. These themes are multi-disciplinarity, learning, internationality and the University community.
The merging of the higher education institutions in Tampere is a central means of meeting the University’s strategic promise and succeeding in the four thematic areas. The measures outlined in the Strategy of the University of Tampere and included in this Action Plan will take the University of Tampere in the desired direction and support the goals of the new university.
The purpose of the quality management system is to support the realisation of the university’s strategic goals. The quality system produces information and policies to be used in the management and resource planning of the University with the aim of developing the preconditions for education and research, and building the capacity of the personnel.
The University’s quality management system was audited in 2014-2015 and it received the national quality label issued by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC). The audit certificate will be valid unti 9 April 2021.
Being issued the HR Excellence in Reseach label by the European Commission shows that the University offers a stimulating and good working environment. The University is also committed to equal and transparent recruitment practices and the development of researchers’ position and careers.
